Surviving the First Month of Breastfeeding

Since just wrapped up the month of August and National Breastfeeding Month, I’ve found myself reflecting on my own journey as a nursing mom.

I nursed my first baby (shown above) for two years. It wasn’t what I planned. Before I became a mom, I thought I would use bottles in public, maybe nurse for a year, and I was certain that breastfeeding was just for feeding. I quickly learned that not all babies take bottles, that breastfeeding was more than just feeding, and who knows when we would be ready to wean.

The best advice I ever got was to get through the first month. I’m not saying that it was easy after the first month, but it was easier. With my first I still had oversupply , I leaked like crazy, and struggled nursing my colicky baby at times.

We got through it though, and made it all the way to two years. We gently weaned at two years while I was almost 20 weeks pregnant.

Here I am on my second baby and almost a month of nursing in the books. Nursing this time around has been much easier! I can even multitask while nursing (which I never thought I’d be able to do)!

Here are some things that have made nursing easier for me….

MILK Nursingwear

I love that their tops and dresses are adorable and nursing friendly! The option to wear a dress while nursing is so great. Since I nursed my first until two, I knew that I would get good use out of nursing friendly clothes (even more than maternity clothes).
They have so many great options that make life as a nursing mom easier. It’s especially important to have nursing friendly clothes while nursing in public. It’s never fun struggling trying to get that latch while grocery shopping, or sitting in church.

MilkMakers & Bravado Designs

These lactation cookies are the perfect snack for nursing moms.
Our teas and cookies contain the highest quality ingredients: premium, all-natural, organic. Preservative free, dairy free, fenugreek free. Delicious and nutritious. Only the best for you and your baby.”

I haven’t had supply issues, but I know it is a very common thing. I also know that keeping your supply up is never a bad thing! These cookies not only boost supply, but they give mom the right nutrition as she nurses.
So if you needed an excuse to eat cookie, here it is!

Bravado Designs makes incredible comfortable nursing bra’s and tanks. I don’t think I could survive breast feeding without their nursing wear!

Covered Goods & NursElet

These multi-use covers are also amazing and great for nursing in public. They can be worn as a scarf and then draped over for nursing. These are lightweight and have 360 coverage.

The NursElet allows you to easily keep track of which side you are nursing on. It also doubles as a simply way to keep your shirt up!

Burp Necessity

These burpshawls are perfect for newborns! Both my boys have had a lot of spit up, and this is a life saver for burping!
It’s large enough to actually avoid spit up getting all over you, and doubles as a nursing cover! It’s incredible soft and can be used as a blanket as well
These shawls are absorbent, useful and incredibly adorable!
