Preparing for Family Photos

Photography has always been a luxury. If people are willing to spend their money on a photographer, checking their portfolio beforehand is very important. Whether it means taking a look at sites like or browsing through Instagram accounts, understanding the photographer’s style will help make a decision on whether to hire them to take your photos.

The only times I have had professional photos taken by a pro photographer like kate Craig Brown Photography have been my senior pictures, our wedding photos, a few hospital photos of my firstborn and now our family of four.

I really believe the investment in a professional photographer is 100% worth it. The amount of time and talent that goes into getting professional photos is incredible. When you make that decision to have portraits done for any special event, or time there are some things to look for.

1.) The photographer – be sure to look at past work. Is it something you love? Are their style and coloring something you want hanging in your home? Have you met them? Do you feel comfortable with them?

I was so blessed to have Areeg of Amelia Mason Portraits as our family photographer. Her ability to capture moments, help pose us, and make you feel natural and comfortable is amazing. Not to mention how amazing she was at making sure my kids felt comfortable in front of the camera. Photographing children is not an easy task, yet she does it flawlessly!

2.) Styling – Find a color scheme that you like and go with it. Exact matching isn’t necessary either. For me, it was easier to find the kid’s clothes since varieties in their sizes are limited. I of course went with Janie and Jack and found them some adorable outfits.

From there I was easily able to find different styles of clothing that matched my husband and me. I’ve also thought about personalizing certain customizable clothes from websites such as Imprint so we can all wear our own shirts with our names on, or something similar anyway?

(SoCozy makes some great (and clean) hair products to style kids hair too)

Areeg was also very helpful giving styling tips!

3.) If you have a baby….

Bring a sling that goes well. You never know when your baby will get sleepy or clingy. It’s nice to have the ability to be hands-free and keep them near you!

4.) If you have kids…..

Prepare them, let them know what you will be doing and what is expected of them. I told Graydon that it was very important that he listened to the lady, looked at the camera, and had fun.

5.) Have fun!

Photos look so much better when you are happy and enjoying yourself. It was so easy to have a good time with Areeg as our photographer!
